Bonsai Odds & Ends – Big BC And Rip Van Winkle Color Up
big bc and rip van winkle color upSneak PeekFall is supposed to mean fall color, but this is not necessarily the case here in the Deep South. With that said, I'm really proud of these two specimens. Big BC and Rip Van Winkle Color Up Down here in the Deep South...

A Huckleberry Bonsai For 2020
So it's time for Thanksgiving weekend, and aside from overeating that can only mean bonsai fun for me. I collected this Huckleberry, Vaccinium sp., this past winter. Except for minimal training work, I've just let it grow to get established. With the weather...
Fall Color And Flower Buds – BC And Huckleberry
Here's one of my landscape Bald cypresses that I've grown from seed since 2000. It gets bigger and better each year. Isn't the color just terrific? This one is just starting to put on its bronze for the year. Once the colors start, you've got maybe a week...
Looking To 2020 – Flowering And Fruiting Species
Though the holidays are not yet upon us, it's not too soon to start thinking of 2020. A lot of the work we do now will have an impact on how our trees develop next year. Today I looked at a few flowering and/or fruiting specimens that will make great progress...

Sunday Evening Hawthorn Notes
Yesterday was my first one-on-one workshop for 2019. We got a lot of work done, mostly on three large BCs. This is a great time of year to do just about everything bonsai. Problem is, it's hard to get it all done! Right now in my garden we've completed first flush,...
Bonsai Odds & Ends – Some Evening Shots
I took a few minutes this evening to do some quick trimming on a couple of trees, including this Chinese elm. Most of you are familiar with this specimen. It continues to fill out and get nicer. I liked the lighting as the sun was going down, so took the...
There’s Design, And Then There’s Re-Design
If you grow bonsai for any length of time, it's almost a given that you will be compelled to re-design some of them along the way. Stuff just happens to our bonsai. Maybe a storm comes through and something large falls and breaks off a branch. Maybe insects...

Bonsai Odds & Ends – Oak, Oak, Sweetgum
Here's a nice smaller Water oak I started working on last year. Water oak is quickly becoming one of my favorite species, featuring small leaves, short internodes and ease of ramification. They are very happy in a bonsai pot. This one budded fairly...
Bonsai Odds & Ends – Oak, Fig, Maple
I love working with unusual species, and making bonsai that defy the normally accepted rules for design. Here are a few examples of current projects. First off is a Red oak, Quercus nuttallii, that I collected in East Texas a couple of years ago. (East Texas...
Oak Sunday
I love oak bonsai. Oaks are, in fact, among the best deciduous species available for bonsai. They take to pot culture well, backbud well, have great bark, and many species have small leaves. What's not to like? Here's a Water oak I lifted this summer in order...

Hi Zach,
When is the next availability of Bald Cypress. I live in Michigan.
I would like to get one booked.
I am retired from the bonsai business, Aby. Sorry.
Is bald cypress Cypressbonsai20 available for sale?
so this is the 1st time in a while I’ve been to the site just showing it off and im super impressed.
Thank you, Josh!
Zach, I see you train bonsai BC in flat top style but am not sure what to picture. Is it supposed to mimic a tree that lost its conical top from wind damage or lightning? Does it look like a bald head with hair/branches growing out from the sides only? Do you have finished ones like this to show as an example?
Thanks, Danny
Danny, the so-called flat-top Bald cypress is simply an older tree that has lost most of its lower branches as it’s grown taller and older, and having reached its genetically limited height the growth in the crown spreads laterally. Check out this post to get an idea of one in training.
