i have a quercus virginiana with a tall taperless branchless trunk with all the branches coming out at the top (about 15″). If I do a trunk chop will the tree die or can it put out new buds? i put it in the ground this past year and will dig it up in spring, Thanks
Maybe, maybe not. Live oaks are a “different breed.” Very difficult to collect from the wild, not that easy to collect from a ground growing area. I’d wait until that time in spring when the old leaves are due to fall and the new ones come in to do any chopping and lifting. That has given me the best results. Good luck!

What’s your take on the oak yamadori collection time? All the internet discusses is English trees in English climate. I’m in Denham Springs.
Late winter for everything but Live oaks. Collect Live oaks on March 1st.
Thanks.
