Winged Elm
Winged elm is one of our native species that features naturally small leaves, rough bark and corky wings on the young branches. They do well in pot culture, making fine bonsai.
I collected this Winged elm from the property of a friend. As with many nice specimens, it had been growing intertwined in a fence for many years. This actually is one of the best places to find good raw material for bonsai. The trunk base on this one is 1.5" at the soil, and the overall height is 12". I just potted it in this fine Lary Howard piece.
