Sweetgum
Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) is a fine native species for bonsai. They take to pot culture well, and grow very quickly. You can establish a style in as little as a year. The leaves, while large in the wild, can be reduced by diligent pinching.
This is a field-grown specimen I lifted this May. I chopped the trunk at 16" and am in the process of growing out the new leader. It has thickened up really well in just a few months' time. The styling of the lower branches was started in June. The trunk base is 2". I expect this specimen will finish up at about 26-28" from the soil. You may be able to move this tree to a bonsai pot in mid-2022.
