Swamp Maple
Swamp maples, otherwise known as red maples (acer rubrum “drummondii”) make nice bonsai despite their reputation for large leaves and long petioles. Yes, their leaves are large in nature and their petioles are long to match … however, in pot culture they do reduce well enough to make attractive bonsai.
This Swamp maple was collected in 2019 and has been in training since. Last year I did a ground-layer on it to improve the root system. Nice trunk character with a healed scar near the base. The trunk measures 1.5" at the soil, and the tree is about 18" in height. It's got some good ramification going now. The pot is a lovely Byron Myrick piece that complements the tree perfectly.
