Bald Cypress
Bald Cypress, or “BC,” is one of the very best species for bonsai, and is sometimes called the King of American Bonsai. No bonsai collection is complete without at least one Bald Cypress.
This specimen was collected in January of 2021. I seldom find nice formal upright BC's, which may sound odd considering that's the most common way they grow. But usually we find at least subtle trunk movement. Regardless, this specimen has beautiful flaring roots and buttressing, great taper and trunk character. I wired it out last year and kept the chosen leader free of competition so it would increase quickly in thickness. The tree was potted on 3/6/22; the remainder of its development can be done in a bonsai pot. The base of the tree is 3.5" measured 3.5" from the soil, and the original trunk chop was at 26". I expect it will finish out at about 32". The pot is an antique unglazed Tokoname rectangle measuring 13" by 10.5".
