American Elm
American elm is one of the best native elm species for bonsai. They grow quickly, are easy to train and do very well in pot culture. They also feature the greatest leaf-size reduction of any species I know, from 5+ inches to less than 1/2″.
I have been growing this American elm in the ground for several years now. It was lifted in 2021, and has spent the past year getting a good root system established. The growth has been good enough this season that I decided to go ahead and do the initial styling. The trunk base on this one is 1.75" at the soil, and the overall height should finish at about 18". You can slip-pot it into a bonsai pot this year, or wait till next year.
