Parsley-leaf Hawthorn – Crataegus Marshallii

Collected in Winter 2017, this one had a neat-looking slender trunk that I eventually cut to in order to make a literati bonsai out of it.  I think it turned out very well.  There’s a new shoot near the base that came up because I’d removed the larger main trunk.  I’m thinking now that this may turn out to be a literati twin-trunk bonsai.  The new shoot will continue growing for the rest of the season, and will be stronger than what is now the main trunk.  Once it’s large enough it’ll be time to wire and position it.

Trunk is 1″ in diameter at the soil, and the trunk is 16″ tall from the soil surface.  Lovely Chuck Iker pot.  I’d estimate the age at about 15 years.

Ships in mid-July.

Parsley-leaf Hawthorn – Crataegus Marshallii

Collected in Winter 2017, this is a nice upright hawthorn bonsai-in-the-making.  Lovely trunk character with exfoliating bark.  Just potted today (6/18/17) into a terrific Chuck Iker round that complements the foliage color beautifully.

Trunk is 1″ in diameter at the soil, and the trunk is chopped at 9″.  Finished height should be about 14-16″.  I’d estimate the age at about 15 years.

Ships in mid-July.

Parsley-leaf Hawthorn – Crataegus Marshallii

Collected in Winter 2017.  This one is different.  The main trunk is 1.75″ across, the smaller one 1.25″.  The larger one is 9″ to the chop.  The larger trunk has a hollow in the center, so email if you’d like a photo of this interesting feature and I’ll give you my idea for what to do with it.

Lots of character in this stump.

Ships in late May.

Riverflat Hawthorn – Crataegus Opaca

Collected in January of 2016 and direct-potted into this nice Byron Myrick oval.  Trunk base is 2″ in diameter, height 12.5″ to the chop, 21″ to the tip of the growing apex.  Age about 35 years.

I really like this slanting style hawthorn bonsai-in-progress.  It’s got great bark and roots, great taper and is growing like a weed already.  I just wired up a branch set, so now all we’ve got to do is wait and let the branches thicken up.  The wire will come off in early summer, with a second round of wiring shortly thereafter.  By this coming fall, this tree’s structure will be mostly built.  The last chore will be developing the crown, which will take about three years.

Ships in mid- to late-April.

Parsley-leaf Hawthorn – Crataegus marshallii

Collected in Winter 2016.  Main trunk is 1″ diameter, finished height will be 16″ (is currently 20.5″, but new leader will be cut back).  Beautiful twin-trunk with great movement and character.  Upright style bonsai in the making.  I just did the initial styling on this one; most of the design will be completed by the end of this growing season.

The pot is a beautiful round by Byron Myrick.

Ships in late April.

Riverflat hawthorn – Crataegus opaca

Beautiful feminine hawthorn, great bark, age about 30 years.  Nice roots, too.  Trunk is 1.75″ in diameter, height 18″ to the chop.  This one can be chopped a bit more if you don’t want it to be too tall.  I’d shoot for a finished height of about 20″.

Collected in October 2015 so I could learn more about the species.  Sure enough, they can be collected in October.  Buds are just popping, so we should get vibrant growth over the next several weeks.

Ships in April.

Price: $185

Riverflat hawthorn – Crataegus opaca

Nice curving trunk, great bark, age about 30 years.  Trunk is 2″ in diameter, height 12.5″ to the chop.  Needs a new leader to thicken, this can be mostly done this year as they tend to grow new leaders very quickly.  Finished height should be about 18″.

Collected in January 2016.  Shoots are just now starting to run.

Ships in May.

UPDATED PHOTO – after fall wiring, shaping and trimming

Riverflat hawthorn – Crataegus opaca

A really elegant tree, great bark, age about 30 years.  Trunk is 1.75″ in diameter, height 14″ to the chop, should finish at about 18″.

Collected in February 2015, I just did a trimming on it to bring the branches back in.  It could stand a wiring now.  I see a broom-form style in this one.  Growth has been strong, and this includes the roots.  Very nice set of radial surface roots on this specimen.

UPDATED PHOTO – after fall wiring, shaping and trimming

Riverflat hawthorn – Crataegus opaca

Beautiful informal upright tree, great bark, age about 40 years.  Trunk is 2.25″ in diameter, height 19″ to the chop, should finish at about 24″.

Collected in February 2015, this tree has produced all but two of the branches you see here from trunk buds.  And look at how quickly the new leader has thickened!  I’m aiming for a traditional hawthorn shape with this one.

I’m commenting on the Hawthorn6pre, in the 1st and 2nd picture. I never would have thought that the tree in pic 1, could turn into the beautiful little tree in pic 2. You do very nice work with your collections along with Mother Nature. Whoever bought this one, is lucky to have it.
The American Elm I bought from you is looking great and I love the little pot it’s in too. Thankyou for the work you do in harvesting and training all these trees and allowing the rest of us to enjoy them.

Thank you, Karen. Actually, the second picture was taken in May 2014. I did some trimming, carving and wiring during winter, which is a good time of year to get “inside” your deciduous trees and work on their structure.
I’m glad you like your American elm. Keep a close eye on the wire this spring, as the branches will put on girth and you may have girdling if you’re not careful. You may only have to pinch from here on to complete the refinement.

Thank you, Michael. It was great seeing you again. I wish the weather had been better, but it could have been a lot worse too.

Keep me posted on the trees’ progress, and let me know if you have any questions or need anything else.

Hi. I’m living in Maryland, i like the Mayhaw and the Crape Myrtle. Which do you think would do better in my climate? Our winters can be brutal. I do have a wood shop for cold storage if nessary. I’m also VERY new to bonsai. I’ve got about 8 plants so far. I’m taking classes, but I’m still worried about killing stuff. Thanks,
    Lisa.
