This specimen was collected in Winter 2019, specifically so I could create a flat-top style Bald cypress bonsai from it. Flat-tops are much faster to develop than the classic pyramidal style specimens, meaning you get to a showable state much sooner. I literally made this design in under a year. The next phase of training for this tree is to develop the lower branches, which need thickening and ramification – easy to accomplish – and to manage the energy in the crown as it ramifies further.

The base of this tree is 2.5″, and it’s currently 33″ tall above the soil surface. Nice, elegant curving trunk and taper. Also very nice surface rootage. The pot is a custom handmade piece by Byron Myrick.

This specimen just came home in Winter 2020. I love these tall, graceful specimens and usually plan on turning them into flat-tops. This one would also make a fine informal upright, a very different style than the usual masculine appearance. It’s totally up to you

Collected in Winter 2020, this is an unusual specimen that should make a unique Bald cypress bonsai. You can take off the side leader or leave it and incorporate it into the design. The base is broader from the front view (4.5″ 4.5″ above the soil) than the side (3.5″ 3.5″ above the soil surface), but the flaring root on the left-hand side helps the tree make a statement. Chopped at 24″. Nice fluting to go with the flaring surface roots (there’s more under the soil, I bury the surface roots to protect them).

I collected this specimen in Winter 2019. It was already budding, but I knew it would probably come back all right. Sure enough, it’s leading this year’s crop in growth already. This is a strong BC. The trunk is 3″ above the root crown. The trunk, which is chopped at 28″, has great taper and movement, and the flaring roots are just terrific (see below for what lies beneath the soil).

Here’s the tree after being prepped for potting. You can see the roots that were buried in order to protect them. When the tree is ultimately placed in a bonsai pot, much of this root base can be exposed. I think this will make for an outstanding bonsai.

I left this tree tall, namely 27″ to the chop, for a couple of reasons. As I said, the taper is really outstanding – the trunk measures just 1.5″ across at the chop. But this is one tree I think lends itself well to a classic flat-top style, and the height is going to help make a great impression once the styling has been accomplished. Don’t care for the flat-top style? You could do a stately informal upright just as easily.

If you’re looking for a Bald cypress bonsai that makes a definitive statement, this tree could easily become the centerpiece of your collection. It’s a sizeable bonsai!

For those of you who haven’t yet grown BC, they are easy to care for and grow vigorously. They put on at least three rounds of growth each year, and can be defoliated every July for a nice set of fall foliage. Nice fall color too, especially if you live farther north than I do.

This beautiful bald cypress was collected in January of 2015 and direct-potted into this fine Byron Myrick oval. What’s remarkable about this specimen is the amazing root base. The trunk diameter is 3″ 3″ above the soil surface, and you just don’t see BC with trunk bases less that 4+ inches sporting this kind of buttress. This one is a rarity.

I began training this tree last year. I made the angled, year two chop in Winter 2016 and cut back the new leader today along with removing a lot of new growth and wiring a couple of new branches. This cypress is going to be a great informal upright specimen. It should be showable in two years, three max. Height to the tip of the new apex is 26″. Should finish at 30″.
