You may remember this Bald cypress forest from my recent blog about it. I had replaced two of the trees and added another two. Those new additions are now growing, so today seemed like a perfect time to do some work on the taller specimens.
The larger specimen at the left of the planting was the most overgrown. It just had two many branches in the crown, so these need thinning out and trimming.
This tree also needed some help in the apex. I’m using the flat-top style for the large trees in this forest, so a little wire helps with the future design.
Lovely tall forest!
Thank you, Pierre.
Zach,
It seems that you have come up with another wonderful Forest. I always like and respect what you do with your trees .
I would like to know if these trees will grow in Snohomish Washington area we have lots of water in cold weather . One of these days I would like to buy a few so let me know if they’re cold hardy sometimes we have 14 inches of snow .
Thank you, Bob. I’m confident BC will grow where are. I’ve shipped them all over the country. As a rule of thumb, it’s easier to grow a more southern species up north than it is to grow a more northern species down south. BC are reasonably cold hardy, with reasonable protection. If you get extended cold temps below 25, an unheated indoor space is recommended.
I just started a two tree planting b/c I see what you have done. How long after new growth shows before I start trimming and shaping? Mine are half the size of a pencil and look happy and healthy.
Yours look great. How thick are they?
Mike, I always like to wait a while with new plantings before trimming and shaping. Like shoots with several inches of extension. My largest trees in this planting are 3/4″ at the base. They are five-year seedlings.
Nice!
Thanks for sharing. I’m creating a BC forest as well and will benefit from your guidance.
I used straight potting soil for mine since BC love water.
Thank you, Roland. Good luck with your forest.
I really like it. Honestly, it looks amazing. Feels soaring. Well done.
Thank you!
